Activists Walk Over Golden Gate to Support Gay Marriage

San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Activists spent Saturday afternoon walking across the Golden Gate Bridge to support gay marriage and equality for same-sex couples.

San Diego resident Jennifer Shoemaker told KCBS Reporter Melissa Culross that she used her march over the bridge to end her 500 mile walk in support of gay marriage.

"I knew I had to do something really long and really positive to get the simple message through," she said.

Shoemaker is a lesbian mother of four who realized only five years ago that she's gay.

She said the goal of her walk was to connect with as many people as possible and show we aren't so different from each other.

Meanwhile, President Bush used his Saturday radio address to throw his support behind a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

"This national question requires a national solution," the president said. "On the issue of profound importance, that solution should come from the people not the courts."

The president said he supports the rights of states to recognize civil unions, but marriage should be designated as between a man and a woman.

The senate is scheduled to vote on the amendment next week.
