San Francisco's St. Ignatius Rowing Team Wins World Title

San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS)  -- It was a noisy homecoming for the St. Ignatius High School boy's crew team this afternoon at San Francisco International Airport.

KCBS reporter Tim Ryan says one parent put Sunday's victory in the prestigious Princess Elizabeth Cup this way, "Saint Ignatius is now the best in the world."

One of the rowers to bring the victory back to San Francisco is 18-year-old graduate Julian Johnson. "We've gone undefeated in 18 races from California to United States to England," he said.

The team's rowing coach Tom O'Connell called the win the "Holy Grail " of rowing and he thanked their hosts in England. "They treated us as close to natives as possible. They made the guys really comfortable and kept everything kind of loose," he said.

The reception area at airport's International terminal was awash in blue and red, the school colors for St. Ignatius.
