San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS) -- A couple of thousand volunteers and their supporters fanned out across San Francisco and Marin County this weekend raising awareness and more than $1 million to fight breast cancer.
KCBS reporter Henry Mulak says the people were participating in a walk from Marin to San Francisco and back in the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
Susan Sato of Sunnyvale brought her family. "We walked 26 miles yesterday. Today is 13 miles for a total of 39 and this is my first year doing it and it's really fun," she said.
Karen Borkowsky, the program director for the Avon Walk says they had a record number of participants this year. "I think everyone is touched by breast cancer so it gives them a chance to give back. The money that we are raising is really making a difference. We are starting to see communities being helped," she said. "People are getting diagnosed earlier in the earlier stages."
The money will fund breast cancer research and help those with the disease.
The Avon Walk over the past three years has donated $15 million to San Francisco General Hospital's program to help underprivileged women battle breast cancer. |
